Hydraulic systems operate under dynamic pressure cycles, and seals change dimensionally with pressure fluctuations, temperature changes, and wear. If axial preload is insufficient, leakage may occur at the sealing interface; if preload is excessive, friction and heat rise, shortening seal life. The role of a disc spring is to apply stable, compensable axial preload to the seal assembly within a limited space, helping to maintain contact pressure at the sealing interface.
In engineering practice, disc springs with a conical profile continuously compensate for preload loss through flattening and elastic recovery. They operate over a pressure range of 500 to 10,000 psi (approximately 3.5 to 69 MPa), achieve preload stability within ±2% under standard test conditions, and can keep helium leak rates below 1×10⁻⁶ std cm³/s, meeting the sealing requirements of critical hydraulic components.
The design of a hydraulic seal disc spring must consider geometric parameters, stiffness characteristics, and installation space. The SUNZO engineering team uses FEA simulation to optimize the conical geometry, typically keeping the dish height-to-thickness ratio between 0.4 and 1.2, and designs variable stiffness profiles of 5 to 50 N/mm according to seal compression requirements.
For high-pressure applications (approximately 34 MPa and above), nested disc spring assemblies with parallel stacking can be adopted, achieving loads up to 20 kN per assembly while reducing axial space by about 40% compared with conventional coil springs, providing design margin for compact hydraulic components.
The material of a disc spring must match the operating temperature, media, and corrosive environment of the hydraulic system:
· 50CrVA alloy spring steel: suitable for industrial hydraulic systems, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to 150°C, tensile strength up to 1,800 MPa, and fatigue life exceeding 10⁶ cycles at 70% of yield strength;
· SUS316 stainless steel: recommended for marine and chemical environments, with neutral salt spray resistance exceeding 1,000 hours (ASTM B117) and tolerance to higher chloride concentrations;
· INCONEL718 superalloy: designed for extreme conditions, with an operating temperature range of -270°C to 650°C, good creep resistance, and compatibility with phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids.
Jiangsu Sunzo also supplies other materials such as 51CrVA, SUS304, and 17-7PH, which can be combined according to working conditions.
Surface treatment directly affects the corrosion resistance and friction behavior of disc springs in hydraulic media:
· Phosphating: zinc-manganese coating of 8 to 12 μm, providing good lubricity and corrosion protection in mineral oil systems;
· Dacromet coating: chromate-free zinc-aluminum flake coating of 5 to 8 μm, with neutral salt spray resistance exceeding 1,500 hours per ISO 9227, suitable for outdoor and marine environments;
· PTFE impregnation: for dynamic sealing applications, keeping the coefficient of friction below 0.15 to reduce wear during start-stop cycles;
· Electroless nickel plating: providing a uniform corrosion-resistant layer in harsh environments such as offshore oil and gas.
Jiangsu Sunzo recommends suitable surface treatment combinations according to media, temperature, and assembly requirements.
Based on the characteristics of different industries, SUNZO provides targeted customization:
· Mobile hydraulics: compact disc springs for components such as excavator boom cylinders, meeting temperature cycling conditions from -30°C to 120°C;
· Offshore oil and gas: subsea wellhead seals using INCONEL718 disc springs with electroless nickel plating (approximately 50 μm) for improved seawater corrosion resistance;
· Aerospace hydraulics: weight-optimized designs for flight control systems through geometry and material optimization, meeting the relevant requirements of aerospace hydraulic system specifications.
Every batch of disc springs for hydraulic seals undergoes systematic validation:
· Load-deflection testing in accordance with disc spring standards such as GB/T 1972 and DIN 2093, with force tolerance controlled within ±3%;
· Ultrasonic flaw detection (ASTM E164) for subsurface defects;
· Thermal cycling from -50°C to 200°C for 1,000 cycles to verify preload retention;
· A material traceability system from raw material lot to final inspection, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates available.
In some field applications, customized disc spring solutions have reduced seal replacement frequency by approximately 60%, helping to lower maintenance costs.
