Disc Spring Life Cycle Management: Engineering Practice from Correct Installation to Condition-based Maintenance | Sunzo Industrial

Full-cycle engineering management: correct installation specification and scientific maintenance strategy of disc spring

The performance and service life of disc springs depend not only on design and manufacturing quality, but also on installation standards and maintenance practices. Even seemingly simple installation procedures and periodic condition checks are critical to ensuring long-term stable operation. Drawing from extensive engineering application experience, Jiangsu Sunzo Industry has systematically outlined key technical points for disc springs throughout their entire lifecycle, from installation to maintenance.

1、Core Specification of Installation: Engineering Logic Behind Direction Selection

When installing a disc spring, a fundamental principle must be observed: the larger end face (outer diameter end) of the disc spring should face the primary load-bearing end or fixed support surface. This specification is not arbitrary but is based on rigorous mechanical considerations:

1. Optimize contact stress distribution: The larger end face provides a greater annular contact area. Under the same axial load, according to the pressure formula (P=F/A), a larger contact area significantly reduces the contact surface pressure. This effectively prevents stress concentration-induced indentations, fretting wear, or premature plastic deformation on the support surface or the edge of the disc spring.

2. Enhance system stability: The large-end support provides a more stable torque balance, which helps to reduce the risk of deflection or overturning of the disc spring when it is under load, and ensures the uniform transmission of load along the axial direction.

3. Consistent with combinational logic: In shunt (parallel) combinations, this specification typically requires mounting with large ends facing large ends and small ends facing small ends; in shunt (series) combinations, it ensures that all end faces contacting the pressure plate are large ends.

2、Active maintenance in use: prevention is better than cure

Once the disc spring is put into use, its condition should be incorporated into the routine maintenance system of the equipment. Regular inspection and evaluation serve as a cost-effective and efficient means to prevent accidental failures and ensure system reliability.

1. Key points for periodic examinations:

Visual inspection: Under the condition of shutdown, visually inspect the disc spring for cracks, corrosion, excessive wear, or permanent deformation. Pay special attention to the conical surface and the edges of the inner and outer diameters.

Dimension and height sampling: For critical applications, periodic sampling measurements of the disc spring assembly's free height should be conducted, comparing it with the initial installation value to monitor any slack or creep trends.

Function indirect evaluation: The performance of the disc spring assembly is evaluated indirectly by monitoring the relevant parameters of the equipment, such as clutch engagement time, valve action pressure, and bolt preload decay.

2. Maintain decision support:

When a single disc spring is found to be damaged, it is recommended to replace all disc springs in the assembly if possible, rather than just the damaged one, to ensure proper stiffness matching and even force distribution between the new and old springs.

For disc springs used in corrosive environments or high-cycle fatigue applications, even if they appear intact, a preventive replacement plan should be established based on their design life and actual operating time.

3、The Extension Service of Three Groups of Elasticity: Guarantee Beyond Product Delivery

At Jiangsu Sunzo Industry, we deliver not just premium products compliant with the National Standard for Disc Springs, but also a robust support system to ensure their performance is fully realized on the client side.

Clear installation instructions: We provide detailed technical documentation with the product, clearly indicating installation direction, recommended torque (if applicable), and lubrication recommendations.

Maintenance and Consultation Services: We provide technical training on disc spring applications and maintenance best practices for our clients' technicians, or develop customized condition checklists for specific equipment.

Rapid Response and Failure Analysis: When disc spring-related issues occur on-site, our technical team provides remote support or on-site services to conduct root cause analysis and propose systematic improvement plans to prevent recurrence.

Proper installation is the foundation of performance, while scientific maintenance extends its lifespan. Let us work together to ensure every technical detail is properly implemented, safeguarding the long-term reliability of your equipment.

SUNZO has it’s own researching and development team and test center, has participate in rule-making of the latest national industry standards and the international ISO standards for disc springs.
